Patriotism
Our Carbon Valley Chapter, NSDAR, shows our patriotism in many ways. Below are just a few of our activities.
Pocket Stars
PAMVETS
National Salute to Veteran Patients Programs
We create pocket stars to give to active military and veterans, enabling us to recycle worn out flags. We cut the stars off the flag and along with a flag grommet, we put them in small clear plastic bags.
We eat breakfast with veterans and hand out pocket stars and Christmas cards. Donate to their organization in support of the veterans. Present Vietnam War lapel pins to Vietnam veterans.
We travel to Wyoming each year, usually around Valentine’s Day or Christmas, to visit the hospital residents and hand out gifts and donated items to veterans, including large-print playing cards, books, DVDs, CDs, and puzzles.
K9 postage and care package items are sent for two care packages to go overseas for military working dogs. Items are collected year-round and shipped when the box is full enough.
Honoring our Honor Flight Veterans
The Dog Ranch, Where Rescues Rescue Veterans
Pioneer Day in Highlandlake and the Buffalo Soldiers
Quilts of Valor
Every year a group of veterans from Northern Colorado are given the trip of a lifetime. They are flown to Washington D.C. where they are greeted as heroes and given a tour, with special emphasis on our war memorials. Along the route to the airport, our chapter joins other organizations in cheering them along their way.
The Dog Ranch, located in Berthoud, CO, is a combination of boarding, training, and farm animal rescue. They work with veterans, especially those with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, teaching them how to care for the dogs and farm animals and giving them a space where they can heal. We have donated to this organization in the past.
For several years, The Buffalo Soldiers of the American West have visited the small community of Highlandlake, Colorado. Each year, our chapter has participated by helping to supply worn American flags for their flag retirement ceremony, handing out our pocket stars and grommets to veterans, and supporting Historic Highlandlake, Inc. in their efforts to preserve the Highlandlake Cemetery.
The Quilts of Valor Foundation mission is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor. Each year our chapter hosts an area chapter to help them present local veterans with custom quilts made especially for them. At a recent meeting, nine (9) veterans were each given a quilt.
