Chapter History

The organization of Carbon Valley Chapter, NSDAR, began in August 2016, when a group of women belonging to another local chapter had a vision for growth in our area. Encouraged by State Regent Peggy Norton and Organizing Secretary Patty Ament, Organizing Regent Debbie Broadhead, along with Nelda Pennington, and Kris Scott, began working on a new chapter for the Tri-Towns area.
In April 2017, the chapter held its organizing meeting at Carbon Valley Library in Firestone, Colorado, with 15 members and several guests present. We named our Carbon Valley Chapter, NSDAR, to honor the area’s rich mining history. The National Board of Management confirmed the chapter later that month and an American flag was flown over the United States Capitol, with the help of Senator Cory Gardner, to commemorate this event. Veteran Larry Bruntz created a special gavel and presented it at the organizing meeting.
Why Carbon Valley? Tucked into the southwestern corner of Weld County, Colorado are the communities of Firestone, Frederick, and Dacono. Together, they are known as the Carbon Valley or Tri-Town area. In the 1860s, coal was discovered in the area. The Carbon Valley name is derived from the low area which runs along the region. Our Carbon Valley namesake has a rich heritage of which we are proud to honor.

What is a Lantern Chapter Designation?

lantern chapter
In the spirit of encouraging chapters to help spread the light of DAR, our National Society has created the Lantern Chapter designation for any chapter that transfers five or more members to revitalize a chapter. The receiving chapter receives the same designation. Carbon Valley Chapter, NSDAR, received this designation in 2022, along with the Longs Peak Chapter, NSDAR.
Our Lantern Chapter designation ties well with our chapter’s namesake.  As a community with a strong history in mining, the antique mining lantern is perfect.
