Conservation

One of our top activities in our Carbon Valley Chapter, NSDAR, is conservation, often referred to as recycling and upcycling. This page highlights some of our projects.

Trex Community Challenge

Green Trex Bench sitting in a grassy area at the Carbon Valley Library.

Each year, our chapter signs up for a year’s collection period. During this time, we work to collect 1,000 lbs. of soft plastic. We then weigh and record the amount of film recycled. After reaching this goal, the TREX company sends us a bench.

Currently, our chapter has collected enough plastic for eight benches, which have been placed around the Tri-Town and Mead area.

In addition to our own challenge, we also help other non-profits — such as the Mead Area Historical Society, the Carbon Valley Regional Library, and the Flight 629 Memorial– with their plastic collection periods so they can earn benches for their projects

Aluminum Can Recycling

We collect aluminum cans for the Wild Animal Sanctuary. They recycle the cans to raise money for the sanctuary’s various projects. In return, they give us plastic for our Trex Community Challenge.

Pop Tops for Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.)

Project: Pop Tops for Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.)
One of the C.A.R. state projects is to continue to collect pull tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. We also collect old bedding and towels for local humane societies.

Pocket Stars for Veterans

Whenever there is an American flag retirement, we cut out the stars and save the grommets. We tie grosgrain ribbon to the grommets and then pack the stars and grommets into small plastic bags. We hand these out to every veteran that we meet as a thank you for their service.
